Tokyo: Sacred Forests to City Icons

Introduction

Begin beneath Tokyo Tower, the 333-metre landmark that has watched over the skyline since 1958. Step into the wooded calm of Meiji Shrine, following a forest of some 100,000 donated trees toward the shrine of the emperor who ushered Japan into the modern age. Pause before the Imperial Palace, where the moats and stone walls of old Edo Castle still guard the heart of the city. Pass through the great red lantern of Kaminarimon and stroll the centuries-old Nakamise lane to the incense-wreathed grounds of Senso-ji. Finish beneath Tokyo Skytree, craning your neck at Japan’s tallest tower as it rises 634 metres above the streets of Sumida.
